According to regulations, it is a must to register with a local agency. But recent feedbacks say they are not required any more and just flight and hotel bookings are enough.

I flew from Hong Kong to Haikou on July 6 using a US passport; did not have a visa, nor did I work with any travel agency. I filled out a health form using an electronic kiosk, then appeared before an immigration officer. I told him I wanted to enter using their 30 day visa-free policy. 2 minutes later I was through. They never asked about hotel reservations or even about my return ticket to Hong Kong but I had this info ready. I was a little worried about the whether the process was reliable but it actually went very smoothly. Full disclosure: I am a Chinese-American who speaks Chinese, but I am not sure that this was a factor. They want to promote this visa-free policy to increase tourism so one would assume that they are motivated to make it as painless as possible.

VISA on arrival at Hainan or VISA in advance ?
Hi,

We are a group of 10 people (French) flying from Hong Kong to Hainan.
Do we have to book an agency appointment to do free visa 48h in advance with an agency ? if yes could you recommend one ?
Or can we simply do the visa on arrival ? and how much will it be for France ?
Thanks.

Thanks

First of all, the Hainan visa on arrival is still in trail stage and it's currently rather difficult to be obtained. But you can easily get a 30-day visa-free access to Hainan, which is free. In principle, registering with a local agency is required. But recent feedbacks from other travelers say only return flight ticket and accommodation orders are enough.

You can simply apply for it at Haikou or Sanya airport upon landing by showing your passport, onward or return flight ticket and otel orders. Sometimes, you also need to register with a local agency. BTW, you cannot have additional landings in other China cities before arriving in Hainan.
