Located just 10 km (6 miles) away from downtown, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding has been created and imitated the natural habitat of giant pandas in order that they might have the best possible environment for rearing and breeding. It houses the most popular panda stars with millions of fans.

The giant pandas are not only a Chinese national treasure but are also beloved by people the world over. They are found only in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. In total there are fewer than 2,000, of which 70% are distributed within the territory of Sichuan Province. Therefore, when visitors from home and abroad come to Chengdu, Sichuan, one of their main objectives will be to see this lovely animal for themselves.

The base cares also for other rare and endangered wild animals with an area of 560 mus (92 acres), 96% of which is verdure. Giant pandas, lesser pandas, black-necked cranes, white storks as well as over 20 species of rare animals are fed and bred there. Verdant bamboo, bright flowers, fresh air, a natural hill scene and a beautiful artificial view are merged ingeniously at the base.

The necessary facilities have been completed and include a fodder room, sleeping quarters and a medical station. Additionally there is a museum together with research laboratories and a training center.

A great number of plants and as many as ten thousand clumps of bamboos and bushes have been cultivated to provide for the animals' diet and habitat. The base is planned to be expanded by another 3,000 mus (500 acres) of land on which to simulate a natural environment in order to prepare the giant pandas bred for release into the wild.

The Giant Panda Museum was opened in 1993 to further scientific education and to improve public awareness of the protection of both wild creatures and their environment. This is the world's only thematic museum for rare and endangered animal species. The three main exhibitions are in the Giant Panda Hall, the Butterfly Hall and the Vertebrate Hall. The exhibits include all kinds of precious pictures, more than 800 materials and show more than 2,140 different samples gathered in Sichuan. These include examples of animals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and insects as well as fossils and models. The resources held in store at the museum include up to ten thousand samples as well as a library of thousands of books and documents. This excellent and comprehensive museum provides a wonderful venue for all who are interested in seeing something of the propagation and protection of the region's natural bio-diversity.

The distance is around 800m between the entrance gate and moonlight nursery. I think there is the map around the entrance visitors can watch. You can choose the place you are interested in.

Chengdu Shuangliu Airport to Panda base and back to airport
Hi,
My flight lands at CD at 7:45 AM and I have a domestic connection at 1:30 PM. I am planning to visit the Panda base. In order to make it early, I was planning to take a taxi from airport... do I need to negotiate a fare for airport taxis? I understand it will take 40 mins by taxi and about 1.5 hrs by metro.

I plan to leave the base around 11:30 AM in order to reach the airport by 12:30 PM. Is this sufficient time to travel back? Should I take the metro or taxi? Will I get a taxi easily and is there is possibility of getting stuck in traffic?

No, you don't need to negotiate the price because the official taxis in airport have taximeters.
To be honest, the time is too tight. Generally speaking, you need to go back to the airport at least 2 hours in advance before the departure.

Thanks for your response. My flight departs at 1:30. So if I leave the panda base at 11:30 it would be 2 hrs before departure. Or do you reckon I leave at 10:30. Would it take me two hours to return back to the airport?

Thank you Gina.
Is it recommended to take the metro both ways to avoid traffic? I preferred taxi in the morning in order to save time and reach early. Perhaps I can use a taxi from and to the nearest metro station?

I dont think i would need to Check in at the airport. I would get a through and through check-in from my earlier flight.

Take metro line 10 to Taipingyuan station, and take metro line 3 to Panda Avenue (Exit A), then walk around 200m to Panda Avenue bus stop to take panda express line 3 to your destination. It takes around 1.5 hours with CNY9. People can buy the ticket online but it is hard for foreigners.

Well, as I know, you can hold Dujiangyan Panda Base. But you'd better to confirm the information before going there.
