Splendid landscapes, the exotic ways of the Naxi ethnic group and the precious Dongba Culture make up the unique city of Lijiang. Each year it attracts a great number of visitors from home and abroad. To find a fairyland far from the bustling metropolises, please do not hesitate to come here.

In many visitors' minds, Lijiang refers to the Old Town which is an essential part of the whole city. In the 800 years from the Southern Song Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, the local governors and their subjects inhabited this city which has an advantageous geographical location not requiring a city wall. They created the famous Dongba Culture and the Naxi Ancient Music, and left a large group of unique Naxi buildings in this area.

Standing at Square Street, in the center of the Old Town, you will be deeply impressed by the charming town and the locals' quiet life, much like the meandering streams that wind through the town. Please slow down your steps here, and immerse yourself in a fairyland on earth.

There are a number of places of historical interest and natural scenic spots here, awaiting your exploration. Mu's Residence (Mufu), once the palace of the supreme ruler Chieftain Mu of the area, was reconstructed by the World Bank in 1996 in the northwest part of Old Town. It is the best place for visitors to enjoy the splendid architectural heritage of ancient Lijiang. Jade Spring Park(Heilongtan Park) is a wonderful place about one kilometer (about 0.62 miles) away from Square Street, combining natural beauty and historical sites harmoniously. The best place to see the full extent of the Old Town is Lion Mountain Park which is just 250 meters (about 0.16 mile) from Square Street. With an altitude of 2,500 meters (8202 feet), the park has a tranquil natural environment. It also has a typical Naxi building-Wan Gu Lou (Aeon Tower) on the mountaintop and some fine local murals.

Eight kilometers (5 miles) to the north of the Lijiang Old Town, you can see the architectural complex of Residential Houses of Baisha Town. In the Song and Yuan dynasties, Baisha was the political, economic and cultural center of the area. It is the embryonic form of the subsequent Lijiang Old Town. The Old Town of Shuhe is another ancient town in the area, which is just 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) to the northwest of the Lijiang Old Town. The largest stone arch bridge in the area was built here: Green Dragon Bridge. Both of these towns can be reached from the Lijiang Old Town by foot or bicycle.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Yunnan
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
Outside of the city, there are a great number of splendid natural attractions hosting more and more adventurers from home and abroad. The most famous one is Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, which is about 15 kilometers (about 9.3 miles) to the north of Lijiang City. More than 5500 meters (about 18,045 feet) above sea level, this mountain is noted for its precipitous slope and charming beauty. White Water River is a river flowing through Blue Moon Valley; it is formed by runoff from the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. At the east foot of the mountain exits an attraction, Dry Sea (Ganhai) . It had been a highland glacial lake before the 1940s and was formed after the water had dried up. And the Spruce Plateau (Yunshan Plateau) located at the foot of the mountain as well, is a large meadow hiding behind a primeval forest. At the southern foot of the mountain, you can find the famous Yufeng Temple , which is surrounded by the flourishing forest and a never-dried river. All this makes it a really good place to visit. As famous as the mountain, Lugu Lake, which is about 184 kilometers (about 114 miles) to the northeast of the city, is a must for visitors. The Mosuo People there who still maintain a matriarchal clan society today will introduce you to another one o f the Chinese minority cultures.

Finally, Lijiang also prepares a series of splendid natural scenic spots for brave visitors. Three Parallel Rivers in Yunnan Protected Areas, Stone Drum and the First Bend of the Yangtze River and the Tiger Leaping Gorge are surely to astonish everyone who enjoys this majestic view.

Lion Mountain Park

The Lion Mountain Park is located in central Lijiang and is only about 250 meters (273 yards) from the Square Street of Lijiang Old Town (Sifang Street). With an elevation of 2,500 meters (8,202 feet), the park is the best place to get a bird’s-eye view of the ancient town. The Lion Mountain looks like a sleeping lion from afar, providing a wonderful picture.

Covering an area of 15 hectares (37 acres), the park is famous for its Wangu Tower (Aeon Tower) on the mountaintop, which is a five-storied all-wooden edifice with five elegant eaves, supported by sixteen 22-meter (72 feet) high pillars. The tower is regarded as the No.1 Domed-shaped Structure in China. It offers tourists a panoramic view of the surrounding areas, the mystical and beautiful Jade Dragon Snow Mountain to the north, the Old Town to the east, and the Naxi minority villages to the south.

At the northern end of the park sit the Wenchang Palace and Twin-Stone Garden. The Wenchang Palace was originally built in 1725 and was once the location for holding exams and folk lectures during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The main sights in the Twin-Stone Garden are a large waterwheel and bas-relief to commemorate the civilization of the Naxi nationality. There is a White Horse Dragon Pond Temple at the southern end of the park, and a crystal pond named White Horse Dragon Pond stands to the east of the temple. Outside of the pond lies the Three-Eye Well closely related to local people’s life.

The mountain is covered by verdant trees and lush grasses. More than 40 old cypresses have grown for about 800 years on the slopes of the mountain. As an important component of the Old Town, the Lion Mountain Park is worth visiting.

Hey, here is my suggestion: you can spend 3 days in Kunming, 3 days in LJ, and another 2 days in Dali.
1. Places to go:
In Kunming: Yunnan Stone Forest; Dianchi Lake, Golden Temple; Western Hills; Bamei Village; Black Dragon Pool; Green Lake Park
In LJ: LJ Old Town; Lugu Lake; Jade Dragon Snow Mountain; Old town of Shuhe; Tiger Leaping Gorge; Jade Spring Park;
In Dali: Dali Ancient City; Erhai Lake; Mt. Cangshan; Three Pagodas; Yan’s Compound; Butterfly Spring; Tie-dyeing
2. Recommend hotels:
In Kunming: Jinjiang Hotel: no. 98, Beijing Road, Guandu District.
In LJ: Grand Hyatt Lijiang: no. 8, Xiangjiang Raod, Gucheng District.
In Dali: Er Hai Lake Town Hotel: no. 204, Fuxing Road, Dali Ancient City.
3. Weather:
If you’re going recently, it may a little bit cold. The temp is around 11C in these cities. So if your time is flexible, you’re suggested to go in Apr. or May. It would be warm there, and your journey will be more enjoyable.

Actually for such a 8 day journey, you’re suggested to join a tour, which will help you better plan your route and make full use of the time.
